Weightlifter Napper wins Gold Coast trials
Dec 17, 2017 - 5:58 AM Pint-sized weightlifter Tegan Napper has given Australian Commonwealth Games selectors a headache by putting herself in the box seat for two weight categories.Napper won the women's 53kg division at the Gold Coast 2018 trials, which was the final opportunity to impress the Australian Weightlifting Federation (AWF) before it submits nominations for April's Games.
But the 31-year-old also finished the year top of the 48kg division, where she finished fourth in Glasgow 2014.
It means AWF selectors, who take into account lifters' best totals at officially sanctioned events throughout 2017, will have to decide how best to divide up its female talent.
Australia hopes to qualify 16 athletes for the Gold Coast Games with one representative in each weight division across both genders.
Napper, who can clean and jerk nearly double her body weight, totalled 172kg in Sydney on Sunday to beat Glasgow 2014 teammate Erika Yamasaki (156kg).
Tia-Clair Toomey, Australia's only female weightlifter at last year's Rio Olympics, was a late withdrawal through injury.
But the 24-year-old Queenslander, who in August was crowned the fittest woman in the world, still leads the 58kg category and is set for nomination.
Toomey's absence left Parisa Haeri (168kg) as the sole competitor in the weight class.
In the men's, two-time Olympian and Delhi 2010 Commonwealth Games gold medallist Damon Kelly took out the plus-105kg division, while 56kg winner Phillip Liao jumped ahead of pacesetter Lynton Hargrave at the last possible moment.
Boris Elesin managed to keep his nose in front of the men's 85kg pack, while Delhi champion and Glasgow silver medallist Simplice Ribouem won the 94kg.
