UMass beats Notre Dame in 5-OT hockey classic
Mar 7, 2015 - 8:10 AM South Bend, IN (SportsNetwork.com) - In a game that lasted nearly six hours and was the longest contest in NCAA Division I ice hockey history, Shane Walsh scored the winning goal to boost UMass to a 4-3 win over Notre Dame Friday night.Actually, the game didn't end until Saturday morning, precisely at 1:30 a.m. ET, or 5 hours, 55 minutes after it began at Compton Ice Arena.
The contest was Game 1 of their first-round series in the Hockey East conference playoffs.
The teams played a total of 151 minutes, 42 seconds, finally finishing on Walsh's tally at the 11:42 mark of the fifth OT.
The previous record for longest game was between Quinnipiac and Union in 2010, and this game barely beat that contest by just over a minute.
Steven Iacobellis scored a hat trick for UMass, which got 75 saves from Steve Mastalerz.
Notre Dame's Cal Petersen made a Division I record 87 saves. Steven Fogarty, Vince Hinostroza and Sam Herr scored for Notre Dame.
