Lions handle Roughriders
Aug 20, 2012 - 2:21 AM Vancouver, BC (Sports Network) - Travis Lulay completed 22-of-30 passes for 257 yards and a touchdown as the British Columbia Lions trounced the Saskatchewan Roughriders, 24-5, on Sunday at BC Place.Lulay also ran for 27 yards and a score on five carries, while Ernest Jackson added a 15-yard touchdown run for the Lions (5-2) who have won three in a row. Arland Bruce caught three passes for 93 yards and a score in the victory.
Darian Durant threw for 170 yards and two interceptions on 18-of-27 passing, while Kory Sheets rushed 10 times for 28 yards and Taj Smith hauled in five passes for 58 yards for the Roughriders (3-4), who have dropped four straight games. Sandro Deangelis was 1-for-2 on field goal attempts for Saskatchewan in the loss.
Saskatchewan opened the scoring after getting great field position following a fumble recovery on the second play of the game. Starting from the BC 42 after the turnover, the Roughriders went 39 yards in seven plays before Deangelis was true from 36 yards out for the first points of the game.
After struggling offensively for most of the first half, the defending Grey Cup champs finally got on the board with less than a minute to go in the half.
Receiver Tim Brown gave the Lions great field position at the Riders 34 with a 65-yard return on a missed field goal and the offense went the rest of the way in six plays before Lulay scrambled to his left for a five-yard touchdown run to make it 7-3 at the half.
Late in the third quarter, Dante Marsh picked off Durant and brought it back 43 yards to the Saskatchewan 19 and Paul McCallum booted a 24-yard field goal to extend the Lions' lead to 10-3.
The British Columbia defense came up with a big two-and-out a bit later in the third quarter and got the offense the ball back at their own 27. Lulay then found Bruce for 28 yards and struck again through the air to Bruce on a 55- yard touchdown strike to make it 17-3 after three quarters.
The Lions capped the rout with a 15-yard touchdown gallop from Jackson midway through the final quarter. Saskatchewan picked up a safety with less than a minute to go, making the final count 24-5.
Game Notes
British Columbia has won five of the last six meetings between the teams ... Lulay has thrown for at least one touchdown in 18 consecutive games, which marked the fourth longest such streak in CFL history ... Despite the loss, the Roughriders lead the all-time series between the teams, 91-81-4.
