Jagr scores twice as Panthers beat Sens
Mar 30, 2015 - 1:20 AM Ottawa, ON (SportsNetwork.com) - Jaromir Jagr scored two goals to help lift the Florida Panthers to a 4-2 win over the Ottawa Senators on Sunday.Jussi Jokinen and Dave Bolland also tallied for Florida, which continues to trail Boston by four points for the final wild-card spot in the Eastern Conference. The Panthers conclude their five-game road trip Tuesday against the Bruins.
Dan Ellis stopped 25 Ottawa shots in his first action since March 17.
"He was outstanding. Dan made some great saves tonight," said Florida coach Gerard Gallant.
Erik Karlsson and Jean-Gabriel Pageau scored third-period goals as an Ottawa comeback bid came up short. Craig Anderson made 33 saves for the Senators, who fell three points behind the Bruins.
Ottawa got on the board via a power-play goal from Karlsson, who beat Ellis on a wrist shot from the blue line at 4:43 of the third.
Jagr made it 3-1 at 13:57 when he faked a shot, skated behind the Ottawa net and scored on a wraparound.
Pageau tapped in a backhand feed from Mike Hoffman to trim the deficit to 3-2 with 2:21 remaining.
Florida's Tomas Kopecky headed to the penalty box for high sticking less than a minute later. Ottawa pulled Anderson for a 6-on-4 advantage, but Bolland fired the puck into the empty net with 55.5 seconds remaining. It was the Panthers' first short-handed goal of the season.
The desperate Panthers applied pressure on the Senators early in the game, outshooting them 11-2 at one point.
Ottawa had the better of the chances later in the period, including a shot off the crossbar by Mark Stone following a Florida giveaway.
In the second period, the Panthers capitalized on a pair of power plays with goals by Jagr and Jokinen.
Jagr cut to the middle to get by Ottawa defenseman Marc Methot and took a shot that beat Anderson at 7:46.
Florida grabbed a 2-0 lead when Bolland fed a pass into the slot to Jokinen, who one-timed it past Anderson with 4:11 remaining.
"We kind of took ourselves out of it (with the penalties)," said Ottawa forward Clarke MacArthur. "We were rolling the lines good at the end of the first."
Game Notes
Bolland picked up his 200th career point with the assist on Jokinen's goal ... Jonathan Huberdeau had two assists for Florida ... The Senators were whistled for five interference penalties.
