British Columbia outlasts Ottawa in low-scoring affair
Sep 6, 2014 - 3:36 AM Ottawa, ON (SportsNetwork.com) - The Ottawa RedBlacks turned the ball over on downs with six seconds remaining in the contest, giving the ball and the victory to the British Columbia Lions, who ran out the clock in a defense- driven 7-5 win at TD Place on Friday night.BC kicker Paul McCallum connected on a pair of field goals in the contest, including a 34-yarder at the end of the first half that gave the Lions (6-4) a 6-5 lead heading into the intermission.
Travis Lulay got the start at quarterback for British Columbia for the injured Kevin Glenn. Lulay completed 18-of-27 passing for 167 yards in the contest, but was injured late in the fourth quarter after taking a hit. He also led the team in rushing with five carries for 50 yards in the win.
Ottawa (1-9) received the ball to start the game, and turned its first drive into three points after Brett Maher drilled a 35-yard field goal with 12:43 left in the period. The field goal represented the first points any team has scored against British Columbia on its opening possession this season.
Henry Burris, who has yet to throw a touchdown pass at home this season for the expansion RedBlacks, completed 21-of-32 passing for 188 yards with an interception. His top target on the night was Marcus Henry, who pulled in four catches for 51 yards.
The two sides combined for a single point in the entire second half. A 69-yard punt by BC's Ricky Schmitt trickled out of the back of the end zone for a single with 4:41 remaining in the third that closed out the game's scoring.
The first quarter ended with Ottawa on top, 3-0. Burris was intercepted by BC defensive back Dante Marsh, who returned the pick into Ottawa territory, early in the second period. A 49-yard McCallum field goal knotted the score up at 3-3.
Later in the second quarter, Ottawa threatened to score with the ball inside the 10-yard line. Running back Chevon Walker caught a dump pass and took the ball down toward the goal line, but the ball was jarred loose and rolled out of bounds. The Lions took over possession, and Walker was injured on the play. He did not reenter the game.
On the very next play, BC running back Andrew Harris was tackled in the end zone for a safety. The RedBlacks took the lead back, 5-3, until McCallum's second field goal when time expired in the half.
The game was briefly delayed in the fourth quarter due to heavy rain and lightning.
